When Life Hands You Lemons, You Punch it in the Face

Well friends, I was dealt one of life's many blows last week. My company downsized and I was laid off. A lot has been going on in my brain since i heard the news. I decided not to dwell on the how and the why and try to think about what I REALLY want to do with my career.

The problem is I have no idea what I really want to do. I wish I had a clear goal in mind so I could focus every fiber of my being on making that happen.

Fortunately I can take a little time out and think things through and decide on what I really for my career. I don't think I want to go back to another typical "office" type job. I've been suffering from office burnout pretty much since my career began after college several years ago. I'm sure you of all people can relate to how hard the monotony can be to a creative minded person. I could never get used to the routine even when the work was interesting.

So I guess my request from all of you is for some brainstorming. What are my strengths? What are my options? Also to anyone who is working independently, how did you get your start? Please email me directly if you wish myflightsofwhimsy (at) gmail (dot) com.

I appreciate your support during this transitional but hopefully beneficial phase. I already know I will be blogging more, and that's never a bad thing!

You have beautiful taste, a flair for unique finds, an eye for design, and a great personality. I full-heartedly believe you would be an amazing wedding planner. A friend told me part of it is planning 3 weddings for free. You already have 2 under your belt and it would be shopping, and being creative... and I know your blog followers would recommend you to all their engaged friends... and you have 132 followers.

I agree with the other gals. While I am new to your blog, I have seen some of the amazing things you have accomplished.

Do NOT get discouraged. It may take time to get to where you want to be, and in these economic times, it can be a little tough. Still, you are young, gifted, and intelligent. I have faith that you will be just fine.

Gentle hugs!

You definitely are going about it with the right attitude, girl...yes, it SUCKS to be forced into this kind of decision, but what you do with it is entirely up to you! You are so very creative with impeccable taste, I'm pretty sure anything related to design (decorating, event planning, maybe even graphic?) would be right up your alley! I have to say, I think I might even be a little envious of you (c: Good luck dear, we'll be here cheering you on!

Matt and I were sorry to hear about your job, Brandi! I am not very knowledgeable about design careers, but I think your friends are right to encourage you to think about working for yourself. I hate the idea of working in an office every day for the same hours each day. If you can liberate yourself from it, do it!

I can share from experience, Brandi is an AMAZING wedding planner!! She singlehandedly planned my wedding to her brother Joel last summer. Not only was every detail perfect, she managed to find the best deal for our budget. Thanks again, Brandi, and you're so talented, you can do anything!

Brandi -

First, I'm so sorry that they laid you off. Its their loss, because you are an incredibly gifted, creative minded woman with a wealth of talent and ingenuity.

What first comes to mind: wedding planner, event coordinator, set decorator or stylist (there are lots of commercials shot in Dallas), and I think you'd do quite well with a home consignment or vintage boutique in Dallas. You have such a great eye. You could even start with a stall at an established place, like Lula B's and work your way from there.

I'm thinking of you and sending all my love. XO - Sarah

oMG, I would die if I was laid off b/c I have a mortgage and a kid in college and am single. However, YOU are so lucky to have this time and an opportunity to take a new course! I would give anything to have that back. IT is a total luxery. Just start with something and if it doesn't work or you do not like it move on. You do not have to decide the rest of your career life right NOW. XXOO
